Since its foundation in 1964 under the direction of Frei Otto, the Institute (at the time still named Institute for Lightweight Structures, IL) has been at the forefront of research on lightweight construction. Several decades of cutting-edge interdisciplinary research have resulted in publications, models, and images of the utmost scientific and cultural relevance.  In 2021, the Institute’s current director Lucio Blandini began a collaboration with the Stuttgart University Library to digitise the Institute's archive.

The aim is to make the documents accessible to a global audience.  Initially,  the focus is set on documents produced between 1964 and 1994. The second phase will focus on research carried out in the period between 1995 and 2020 under the direction of Werner Sobek. The ultimate goal is to create a comprehensive database alongside a semantic map of the topics investigated, the actors involved, and the associated networks.
